CEIR BREAKING NEWS: 2023 Exhibition Industry Census Now Available

DALLAS, 29 June 2023 – Today, the Center for Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR) released the 2023 Exhibition Industry Census reporting on the event count and size of U.S. business-to-business (B2B) exhibitions that took place in 2019, the high-mark for the industry pre-COVID. The industry continues to be on the rebound from COVID and is forecast to be fully recovered next year, as reported in the recently released 2023 CEIR Index. These two reports together paint the picture of where event recovery is likely to be most active.

The 130-page Census report documents event activity for the continental U.S. states and Hawaii, as well as the top-performing 50 U.S. cities. These rankings are based on four criteria: event count, net square feet of exhibit space (NSF), number of attendees and for the first time, a composite Index for NSF and number of attendees.

This Census shows when and where B2B exhibitions are held. And for the first time, it also includes the distribution of exhibition metrics by sector and subsector. The composite Index for NSF and number of attendees provides a fuller picture of a B2B exhibition size and economic impact in listed cities and states.

“This document is of high value to destinations looking to assess their performance relative to their competitive peer set and to organizers who are evaluating locations for future events,” said CEIR economist Dr. Allen Shaw, Chief Economist for Global Economic Consulting Associates, Inc.

The Census offers the following information for every geographical area examined: an overview of each criteria analyzed as well as a breakdown of events by venue type, NSF of exhibit space, monthly activity and, for the first time, the distribution of metrics across each of the 14 industry sectors and their corresponding subsectors.

“The Census is an important piece of research and we are extremely grateful to the financial supporters of CEIR, without whom the CEIR Census and the CEIR Index would not be possible,” said CEIR CEO Cathy Breden, CMP-F, CAE, CEM.
