2023 CEIR Index Report Now Available

DALLAS, 5 June 2023 – Today, the Center for Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR) released the 2023 CEIR Index Report, which analyzes the 2022 business-to-business (B2B) exhibition industry performance and provides an economic and exhibition industry forecast through 2025.

“2023 will be challenging for the exhibition industry, as the economy slows down further and businesses are more cautious,” said CEIR Economist Dr. Allen Shaw, Chief Economist for Global Economic Consulting Associates, Inc. “Still being under the shadow of COVID-19 and a slowing economy, the CEIR Total Index is forecast to remain below 2019 levels in 2023. By 2024, currently high inflation and the threat of recession should diminish, allowing the exhibition industry to fully recover. Nonetheless, performance by sector will diverge depending on its secular (long-term) trends, underlying macroeconomic conditions and sector-specific factors.”

The CEIR Index Report provides data on the U.S. B2B exhibition industry across 14 key sectors. As an objective measure of the annual performance of the exhibition industry, the CEIR Index measures year-over-year changes in four key metrics to determine overall performance: net square feet (NSF) of exhibit space sold; professional attendance; number of exhibiting companies; and gross revenue. The 14 industry sectors are:

  • Business Services (BZ)
  • Consumer Goods and Services (CG)
  • Discretionary Consumer Goods and Services (CS)
  • Education (ED)
  • Food (FD)
  • Financial, Legal and Real Estate (FN)
  • Government (GV)
  • Building, Construction, Home and Repair (HM)
  • Industrial/Heavy Machinery and Finished Business Inputs (ID)
  • Communications and Information Technology (IT)
  • Medical and Health Care (MD)
  • Raw Materials and Science (RM)
  • Sporting Goods, Travel and Entertainment (ST)
  • Transportation (TX)

“CEIR collects data directly from B2B exhibition organizers and includes both large and small events,” said CEO Cathy Breden, CMP-F, CAE, CEM. “Organizers are encouraged to provide their show data by using the Event Performance Analyzer. The Event Performance Analyzer will provide instant information on how their event’s performance compares to CEIR Index benchmarks. In exchange for submitting data for a valid B2B exhibition, organizers will receive the Index for their event’s sector.”

A forecast update of the CEIR Index Report will be presented at the Predict, CEIR’s Annual Exhibition Industry Outlook Conference to be held 29-30 August 2023 at the MGM National Harbor in Forest Heights, Md.
